The last seven days were packed with big news stories so lets look back over which of them hit our headlines
In a surprise result French director Jacques Audiard won the Cannes film festival’s premier award, the Palme d’Or, for his work concerning a veteran of the Sri Lankan civil war attempting to create a life for themselves in with an ersatz family, Dheepan. The Grand Prix, or second prize, went to Laszlo Nemes for Son of Saul a story of the Sonderkkommando at Auschwitz during the holocaust. The pre-competition favorite The Lobster, took third prize, Prix du Jury.
John Nash, the US mathematician and Nobel Prize winner, who was the inspiration behind Ron Howard’s four-Oscar winning film A Beautiful Mind starring Russell Crowe that highlighted his struggles with schizophrenia died last week in a car crash along with his wife. Police say the couple were traveling in a taxi when the driver lost control of the vehicle which crashed into a guard rail and impacted another car on the New Jersey Turnpike.
Greece’s financial situation hit the headlines again as interior minister, Nikos Voutsis, said in very blunt during an interview on Mega TV that the country would be defaulting on 1.6bn EUR of debt repayments that are due on the loans used to bailout the southern European nation. “This money will not be given, is not there to be given.” He said. The Syriza led government of Yanis Varoufakis has long sought a better deal on their loans, a deal the EU has been unwilling to agree to.
In sport reigning Formula 1 world champion, Lewis Hamilton, found himself 23 seconds ahead of the field going into the latter part of the Monaco Grand Prix when an uncharacteristic error on the part of his team, Mercedes, saw him give away two places in a safety car pit stop mistake. Meanwhile Liu Dejian a multi-millionaire in Fujian Province, China, has made his corporate headquarters stand out from the crowd by building it in the shape of the Enterprise from the TV series Star Trek. Costing an estimated 100 million GBP to construct the new NetDragon Websoft building was begun in 2008 and has just been completed. China’s most popular mobile internet provider, NetDragon Websoft now have a home going as boldly into the future as they are.
